ContaxCRM v3 New Features [4]
08/11/11 15:50
This is the fourth in a series of short blog posts that will each very briefly cover one of the many, many new features of the upcoming ContaxCRM Version 3. They are presented in no particular order. Today we are looking at Data Tools.
All database based software should come with tools to enable the owner of the data to make changes, perform updates, do housekeeping tasks, examine the database structure etc. After all, it’s your data, not ours.
The images below give you a preview of some of the Data Tools available within ContaxCRM Version 3. All these tools are available within a single window which is opened from the Utilities menu.

Veracity Source Control
17/10/11 10:54
I recently switched Version Control for ContaxCRM over to Veracity from my previous CVS. I did this for two reasons, the first was that I wasn't overly happy with my existing system and the second reason is that Eric Sink the owner of SourceGear, the company, and Veracity, the product, sent me a free of charge edition of his latest book: 'Version Control by Example'.
I loved the book so much I thought I would give his Veracity product a try. I've read Eric before a few years ago as he is also the author of one of the definitive books for new the software developer / entrepreuner. The Business of Software
The title of his latest book 'Version Control by Example' hardly promises a riveting read, yet Eric's rhetoric is suitably light hearted and his comedy analogies suitably terrible that I found myself very entertained and devoured the book within a couple of days.
For anyone considering Version / Source Control or any CVS / DVCS this book is a worthwhile read.

ContaxCRM: 1st For Charities
14/10/11 11:42
The ongoing push to release ContaxCRM Version 3, two large ongoing custom developments and the need to occasionally sleep and eat, have meant it’s been full on for us recently. Hence my lack of recent blog posts.
This post can therefore be classed as a rest for me
What I want to talk about today is a niche market that we are catering for with ContaxCRM. That niche market is Charities / Voluntary / Non Profits. We have spent the last few months working with several organisations to learn about how they work and what they want and need from a system to help them stay on top of their members, trustees, events, mailings etc.
It has been a real eye opener for me. Some of the Charity and Non Profits that I have seen so far have been running abysmal, cobbled together software and paying an arm and a leg for it. I’ll discuss that more in a future post but suffice to say that there are some unsavoury companies out there who are making money off the back of donations that you and I are making because we want to help starving children in Africa or flood victims in Pakistan, or whatever your charity of choice is. It’s not illegal, but it also isn’t ethical.
Our offering which will be available with Version 3 (Coming Soon - I promise !) will firstly be 30% cheaper for a Charity, Voluntary or Non Profit organisation to purchase. In addition all support service costs will be reduced. Finally consultancy advice will given free of charge as regards additional hardware or service purchases. ie what to buy - what do they actually need - and where they should buy it. That’s a promise.
That’s all well and good but we need to ensure our software handles some of the tasks that are unique to charities. One of these areas is Donations. The screenshot below shows a sneak preview of our Donation Transaction Overview window which also shows Totals for each currency and Totals for Gift Aid in each currency.

This is just a taster of what Charity specific functionality is to come in Version 3 which has many functions built-in to enable it to be utilised by Charities. If you aren’t a Charity or Non Profit - then you don’t have to see those options, you’ll have plenty to keep you occupied will all the other new features of Version 3 ![]()
Let us know what you think.
